BlueAir 603

Blueair 603 Review Summary

The Good:
The Blueair 603 is an improved Blueair 503. It is still as quiet, but performs much better due to a different casing design and more efficient motor.

The Bad:
The machine’s efficient HEPASilent filter is expensive. And it doesn’t have an automatic sensor that adjusts the fan speed according to the pollution level.

The BottomLine:
If you want a high performance machine to clean normal household pollutants, this is one of the contender. But be prepared to pay a premium.

What we like about the BlueAir 603

The filters: The major difference between BlueAir machines and other air purifiers that uses a HEPA filter is in the technology called the HEPASilent.

The HEPASilent filters made by Blueair has larger holes than a normal HEPA but before dirty air is sucked through the filter, the machine uses ion brushes to charge if first. So, while normal air purifiers suck the air through their filter, the Blueair 603 makes the charged contaminants attracted to it’s filter.

Because of this, the filter is quieter and more efficient than most machines in the market. If a HEPA can trap contaminants 0.3 micron and larger, this one traps smaller airborne contaminants – from 0.1 micron or larger.

There are 3 HEPASilent filters positioned in this machine.

Filter change is easy: To replace all 3 filters inside the unit, you just need to open the top lid with your hand.

Practical: The unit is made of galvanized steel and you can move it around your rooms using it’s castors. There’s also a timer that counts down from 6 months to remind you when to change the filter. And because it so quiet, there’s a blue power on light to let you know if it’s on operation.

Uses little electricity: An Energy Star qualified, it consumes 35 Watt on low and 120 Watt on high speed.

Works faster: Similar to the best-selling 503, the 603 diffuses filtered air from all sides. And because the filter doesn’t block the air, filtered air is released faster than machines using traditional HEPA.

It’s silent: Since air is not forced through the filters, the motor doesn’t need to work hard. Coupled with noise-muffling steel for the housing, you’ll get a quiet machine that lets you sleep peacefully.

Safe for kids and pets: This air purifier shuts down automatically if it’s door is opened. Important feature if you have small kids or curious pets around the house.

But, we are concerned that :

It’s relatively expensive: Covering around 600 sq feet, the 603 is one of the most expensive air purifier in the class.

The filter cost: You need to spend around $160 a year if you change the filter every 6 months as recommended by Blueair.

Warranty : 10 years – but only if you change the filter according to Blueair’s schedule.

No pre-filter : Most air cleaners come with pre-filter to stop bigger airborne particles from entering the main filter. But the 603 one lacks one. We suggest you vacuum your filter to help it lasts longer.

It’s all manual: It has only 3 fan speeds that you adjust with a manual dial knob. It will not adjust the fan speed automatically if the air suddenly gets contaminated.

No remote control : Not a big issue for most people.

Model Variations

Same Model, Different Filter

There is another machine called the 603 with SmokeStop filter.

The only difference is the 603 with the SmokeStop comes with a slightly different filter to filter gases, smoke and odors apart from everyday pollution that the basic filter can capture.

The filter has 5.3 lbs. of activated coconut shell carbon impregnated with Potassium Iodide (KI), Phosphoric acid (H3PO4), and Potassium Hydroxide (KOH).

While the normal price of a 603 is $650, the SmokeStop version is $750. The filter will costs you $300 per year.

About Blueair

Blueair is a Swedish company founded in 1996 by a former Electrolux executive, Bengt Rittri.

The company initially struggled but was saved by the introduction of Blueair 501 (revised to become 502 and 503 now). Stemming from this success, Blueair introduced similar but bigger models like the 601.

Product Quality

Blueair focuses a lot on design, durability and ease of use.

The housing is made of galvanized steel while the fan and blower are manufactured by a German engineering company.

While many air purifiers are not designed to be stylish, Blueair machines have received the Excellent Swedish Design award and the Blueair 501 air purifier is displayed as an exhibit at the Swedish National Museum.

Most companies are happy to use standard HEPA filters. Blueair, on the other hand uses a HEPA-like filters that they claim work better and quieter.

Known as the HEPASilent, Blueair’s filters have larger holes and do not resist air flow like a normal HEPA.

To make it efficient, an electrostatic charger is positioned before this HEPA to charge airborne pollutants. This way, the particles will first be charged and end up attracted to the HEPASilent. This is different from standard HEPA machines which force air through the filters.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) awarded Blueair air purifiers the highest CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) in it’s category in 2004. This means its’ air purifiers clean polluted air faster than other machines tested.

BlueAir 403 Review Summary

The Good:
Just like any other Blueair air cleaners, this one comes with an energy efficient HEPA Silent filter and a quiet motor.

The Bad:
You need to change the filter every 6 months.

The Bottomline:
The Blueair 403 still maintains the efficient and energy saving filter used by it’s bigger siblings. But with only 1 filter and negligible amount of carbon in it means that it will not help much with odor or smoke problem.

What we like about the Blueair 403.

The filter: BlueAir 403 uses a HEPA-like filter called the HEPASilent like other machines made by the company.

It works like this. Before dirty air is sucked through the filter, the machine uses ion brushes to charge if first. So, while air purifiers made by other companies force the air through their filters, this one makes the charged contaminants attracted to the filter.

And because the dirty particle willingly cling to the filter, the HEPASilent can have larger holes than a normal HEPA. As a result, you get a quiet and efficient cleaning machine.

Filter is easy to change: The unit is designed so that you can change the filter without using a screwdriver or any other tools.

Practical: The unit is made of galvanized steel and can be moved around using it’s built-in carry handle. There’s also a timer that counts down from 6 months to remind you when to change the filter. And because it so quiet, there’s a blue power on light to let you know if it’s on operation.

Uses little electricity: It only consumes 30 Watt on low and 70 Watt on high speed.

It’s silent: Because the filter has better airflow than a HEPA filter, the Blueair 403 is one of the quietest machine in it’s class. Suitable for your bedroom or study area.

Our Concern :

The Price: It only covers a relatively small area but the cost is similar to machines that cover twice the area.

The filter cost: At around $120 a year for 1 filter, it is one of the most expensive replacement filter in it’s class.
BlueAir 203

Blueair 203 Review Summary

The Good:
This portable machine is relatively quiet and comes with the efficient HEPASilent technology used by it’s more expensive siblings.

The Bad:
Filter is still quite expensive.

The Bottomline:
There’s no doubt that this is a good machine for your small room. Unfortunately, we think it is quite expensive to own and maintain. If money is not an issue for you, this is one of the air purifier that you should consider. Otherwise, keep looking.

What we like about Blueair 203.

The filters:
BlueAir 203 uses a HEPA-like filter called the HEPASilent like all other machines made by the company.

It works like this. Before dirty air is sucked through the filter, the machine charged if first. So, instead of being forced through it, the charged particles will naturally stick to the filter.

And because the dirty particle seeks the filter, it can have larger holes than a traditional HEPA without degrading the performance. As a result, you get a quiet, efficient machine.

Filter is easy to change: You don’t need use any tools to change the filter.

Practical: The unit is made of galvanized steel which is light enough to move around using it’s carry handle. There’s also a timer that counts down from 6 months to remind you when to change the filter.

Uses little electricity: It only consumes 20 Watt on low and 50 Watt on high speed.

It’s silent: The filter has been designed allow better airflow than a HEPA filter. Thus, Blueair 203 is one of the quietest machine in it’s class. Perfect for your bedroom or study area.

But, we are concerned that :

The Price: Most air purifiers that covers area this big is around $200. But this one is $100 dearer.

The filter cost: At around $100 a year, it is one of the most expensive replacement filter in it’s class.

Warranty : You need to change your filter every 6 months or the warranty will be void.

No carbon: Because it has no carbon filter, it won’t handle smoke, gases or odor well.

The SmokeStop comes with 0.2 lbs. of coconut shell activated carbon which contains Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) and Potassium Iodide (KI).

Unfortunately, with only 0.2 lbs of carbon, we do not think it is strong enough to do what it is supposed to do. It also costs $50 more.

Allerair 4000 Vocarb

Allerair 4000 Vocarb Review Summary

The Good:
With a very thick carbon filter, this machine is well-equipped to reduce smoke or odor problem.

The Bad:
The design is outdated and the control is manual.

The Bottomline:
If you don’t care about noise, style and ease of use – but need a powerful machine that could help reduce odor, smoke and harmful gases, consider this one. But if you need a balance between the two, look for a Rabbit Air or Alen Corp machine instead.

What we like about the AllerAir 4000 Vocarb

The filters: At a glance, it is just like any other AllerAir air purifier. It has a vacuumable pre-filter, anti-microbial filter, a thick 12 lbs carbon filter and a high grade medical HEPA filter.

But the difference is in the carbon filter. It is a boosted blend, designed to aggressively combat odor, smoke and gases. AllerAir says this unit is best used for newly renovated homes, places with heavy smoke, or unknown gases.

360 degrees air intake: The cylindrical shape maximizes airflow through the machine.

Made of Steel: To make sure it is suitable for those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), this machine is made of steel so that it doesn’t react with the air. Most machines in the market are made of plastic.

Long Filter Life: While the pre-filter needs to be changed every 3 months, the Hepa and the carbon lasts 2 to 5 years depending on the level of pollution and how frequent you use the machine.

Extra protection: If you need a machine to control airborne fungus, ask for the AllerAir 4000 with UV protection. And if the vocarb blend is not strong enough, the company also offers a custom carbon blend.

But We are concerned that :

It’s Quite Loud: The lowest setting is 35dB. If you’re a light sleeper you definitely won’t enjoy having this machine in your bedroom.

Has only 3 fan speeds: You only have the option of low, fast and turbo.

Heavy : At around 42 lbs, with the help of it’s wheels you may be able to push it around. But forget about lifting it up the stairs if you have back problem or over 50.

Has no digital display: Like Austin Air machines, the control is old-fashioned.

Has no digital features: Because it is not a digitally controlled machine, there’s no remote control, timer or filter replacement alert. You need to remind yourself to change your filter ( which is troublesome, since you need to replace each filter at different time ).

Looks outdated : Your guests might wonder why you keep a humming log in your home.

Model Variations

What’s the difference ?

There are a few other models that are based on this machine.

While this 4000 Vocarb has a 2.5 inch carbon filter that weighs 12 lbs, the :

4000 D Vocarb has a 3 inch Carbon Filter that weighs 16 lbs. This machine also comes with a Micro-HEPA wrap.

The filters: AllerAir 4000 Exec is an all rounder air purifier with 4 filters :-

Prefilter – traps large particles, quick to change.

HEPA – laser tested, medical grade, traps 99.97% of particles (as small as 0.3 microns)

2 anti-microbial filters.

Carbon – 18 lbs. of activated carbon.

And they lasts these long :-

Prefilter: 3 months

HEPA: 5-7 years

Carbon: 2-5 years

360 degrees air intake: The company claims their cylindrical shape maximizes airflow through the machine.

Made of steel: True to the company’s aim to make sure its’ machines are suitable for those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), this machine is made of steel so that it doesn’t react with the air and is sturdy.

Long filter Life: While the pre-filter needs to be changed every 3 months, the Hepa and the carbon lasts 2 to 5 years depending on the level of pollution and how frequent you use the machine.

Has extra protection: If you need a machine to control airborne fungus, ask for the AllerAir 4000 with UV protection. The company also offers a custom carbon blend if you need one.

Long warranty: It comes with a limited 10 years warranty.

But we are concerned about the:

Noise: The lowest setting is 35dB, which is loud if you want to use it for your bedroom.

3 fan speeds: You only have the option of low, fast and turbo.

Weight : At around 42 lbs, with the help of its’ wheels you may be able to push it around. But forget about lifting it up the stairs if you have back problem or over 50.

No digital display: Like Austin Air machines, the control is old-fashioned.

So, no digital features: Because it is not a digitally controlled machine, there’s no remote control, timer or filter replacement alert. You need to remind yourself to change your filter ( which is troublesome, since you need to replace each filter at different time ).

The outdated look : Your guests might wonder why you keep a humming log in your home.

What’s the difference ?

There are a few other models that are based on this machine.

While this 4000 Exec has a 2.5 inch carbon filter that weighs 12 lbs, the :

4000 D Exec has a 3 inch Carbon Filter that weighs 16 lbs. This machine also comes with a Micro-HEPA wrap.

4000 DX Exec has a 3.5 inch Carbon Filter that weighs 18 lbs. This machine also comes with a Micro-HEPA wrap.

Apart from these, they are almost identical.

Allerair 5000 Vocarb

Allerair 5000 Vocarb Review Summary.

The Good: 4 filters including a very thick carbon filter. Sturdy and inert machine – suitable for those who suffer from multiple sensitivities.

The Bad: Old fashioned, heavy, quite loud and lack digital features.

The Bottomline: What AllerAir has built here is an industrial strength machine that can clear your everyday airborne contaminants effectively and also controls odor, smoke and gases – better than most commercial machines out there.

If you live in an area where that is a big problem, seriously consider this machine.

What we like about the Allerair 5000 Vocarb.

The Filter: There are 4 filters in this machine :-

Vacuumable prefilter – traps large particles, quick to change

HEPA – medical grade, trapping 99.97% of particles (as small as 0.3 microns)

2 anti-microbial filters

Carbon – 18 lbs. of activated carbon specially formulated for VOCs

With the thick carbon, this machine not only helps clean your everyday air pollution but is also equipped to reduce smoke, odor and harmful gases emitted by products like aerosol, new carpets and mold toxins.

This is one of the most comprehensive filter set you’d ever find in an air purifier.

360 degrees air intake: The machine comes in cylindrical shape to maximizes airflow.

Made of Steel: To make sure it doesn’t react with the air and is durable, the Allerair 5000 is encased in steel.

Long Filter Life: While the pre-filter needs to be changed every 3 months, it only costs $40 a year. The Hepa and the carbon lasts 2 to 5 years depending on the level of pollution and how frequent you use the machine.

Warranty: It is backed by a 10 years limited warranty.

But we are concerned about these :

Quite Loud: The lowest setting is 35dB, which is loud if you want to use it for your bedroom. The other 2 settings will be at 55 and 65 dB.

The outdated look : Your guests might wonder why you keep a humming log in your home.

Need tools to change filter: You can replace the pre-filter without a tool but you need a screwdriver for the other 3.

5000 DX Vocarb, has 3.5 inch Carbon Filter

5000 W Vocarb, has 2.5 inch filter like the normal vocarb but comes with an accesory similar to a vacuum host to clear toxins before it becomes airborne.
