 Answering the skeptics.
The ultimate reason why someone would spend his/her hard earned money to buy an air purifier is due to the health benefits an air purifier could offer.
The problem is, are there any scientific studies that support the health claims of air purifier manufacturers?
Effectiveness Studies
A double blind studies by Reisman, et al in 1990 concluded that after their 8 weeks study, it was suggested that there are some benefit from the use of the HEPA filter in a mixed population of patients with allergic rhinitis.
These patients were exposed to ETS, house dust mites and animal dander. After the studies, it was shown that there was significant differences in total and individual symptoms of congestion, discharge, eye irritation, and upper airway itching.
Another study by Bascom, et al. in 1996 showed that air cleaner significantly reduce the symptoms of headache, rhinorrhea, and minimum cross sectional area of the nasal passage of people exposed to cigarette smoke.
Claims Refuted
Two other studies by Antonicelli in 1991 and Warburton in 1994 however refute the two findings above, saying that air cleaners have no positive effect on health.
With two scientific findings supporting the air purifier manufacturer's claim and another two refute the claims, it appears that it's difficult to assess whether or not an air purifier would help relieve your health problems.
Other Ways To Assess
In our opinion, apart from scientific evidence, you could also assess whether an air purifier is effective by the experience of air purifier buyers.
Surf to product rating sites ( like epinions, allergybuyersclub and amazon) and see for yourself what air purifiers buyer has to say.
You'd see at least 80% of those buyers would say that there's some improvement to their health.
